Magi

Magi
   A non-Aryan, possibly Turanian, tribe of professional magicians, astrologers, and priests, established in western Persia before the advent of the Iranians, and certainly before that of Zarathustra. The Wise Men from the East, mentioned in the New Testament, were probably of this tribe, as was Zoroaster, the Magian. After the development of Mazdaism the Magi held a similar position to that of the Levites, in that they alone had the ritual knowledge necessary to slay the victims, to prepare the sacred Haoma, and to hold the Barsom (the bunch of fine tamarisk boughs). The words magus and magician constitute a present-day tribute to their legendary powers.
